DESCRIPTION: EPW - Parkes & King, London (also King & Parkes, before 1744), quarter repeating on bell, verge fusee, 50mm, 22K yellow gold OF original pair cases with pierced and engraved inner bearing incuse casemaker's mark "SD" for Samuel Davies (known attributions from 1710-20 at least, mark registered 1718), outer in repoussé with classic scene of Aeneas and Dido, KWKS, WED, gilt pierced hands, verge escapement, gilt mvt with pierced & engraved foliate scrolled balance cock, signed raised gilt locking dust-cap, s#1787. Gross weight of assembled watch 80.8 dwt (125.6 g). Samuel Davies is listed by Priestley as born ca 1692, apprenticed to Jenkin Davies in 1706, Freeman of the Goldsmith's Company in 1713, and Liveryman of same in 1740, making for a potential active period of at least 1713 to 1740 give or take a few years. His 1718 registry lists his address as "Old Bailey, next door to the Coffee House" (see Philip Priestley, "Early Watch Case Makers of England 1631-1720," page 18, NAWCC Special Supplement #3).
CONDITION: Mvt: Ticks and stops, needs OH, shows good escapement function, plates show excellent gilding, little oxide on steel components; good repeat function, needs hammer adjustment to not dampen bell; dial has single clean edge chip at 4, otherwise perfect; hands near mint; original outer case shows medium wear, some MFS, no visible dents or dings, facial detail gone except for Dido, break on head of Aeneas, other detail gone; button latch good; original inner case shows little wear, some MFS, no dents or dings; bow replaced, brass, pendant original with top decorative button missing; good domed glass crystal.
